Creating Shared Culture - Art and the Pro-Am

– posted by Sally

PUBLIC LECTURE – MELBOURNE
Creating Shared Culture – Art and the Pro-Am
a public lecture by Alasdair Foster
presented by RMIT University Photography Program

Increasingly, the arts are being characterised as an industry whose primary driver is economic. Public funding, which began in earnest after the Second World War, has shifted its emphasis from the nurturing of the arts as a public good to the investment in art as a generator of monetisable product and instrumental change. In doing so it has promoted a firm division between a minority of active creators and a majority of passive consumers: the market.
More recently, communications technologies have facilitated a resurgence of the ‘pro-am’ in the arts, practicing with skilled proficiency without seeking to earn a living from it. While some may see this as a threat to full-time artists, Alasdair Foster argues that it is healthier for the culture of a community and for professionals.

Alasdair Foster is a curator, writer, editor, researcher and policy advisor.
