ABUS Photography Awards

– posted by Sally

A coulple of weeks ago I judged the ABUS photography awards.
Congratulations Shelley Horan for her image:

"Houdini, possibly the greatest magician in history constantly escaped the inescapable. Straight - jackets, handcuffs, milk cans… all in a days work. He's just dam lucky he never had to deal with an ABUS lock! My image is a play on a famous Houdini image in which the great magician is standing defiantly draped in chains and locks. He knows he's getting out of that one. My Houdini is, however, chained and bound with ABUS locks. And he knows he can't beat this one."

Congratulations Jacqui Henshaw.

Ross Calia finalist in HeadOn and the Brunswick Street Gallery Photographic prize.

– posted by Sally

This is Ross Calia's submission to this years HeadOn Portrait prize. He was a finalist with this image of Blue Joey in not only HeadOn 2012, but also the Brunswick Street Gallery photographic prize.

Blue Joey/Black Elvis: Gnarnayarrahe Inmurry Waitairie is an Aboriginal elder originally from Roebourne, Western Australia.

His name means ’A little blue joey, born beside a spring in the Dreamtime'. Taken away from his parents at the age of four, he was placed in a Church of Christ Home and renamed Trevor Phillips by missionaries, from which he escaped and was recaptured numerous times.

Upon arrival in Melbourne, one of Gnarnayarrahe's dreams was ‘to be an Aboriginal person who never loses his identity’. A performing artist, he also goes by the title of Black Elvis.

Mardiana Sani- Australia’s Top Emerging Photographer by Capture Magazine.

– posted by Kerry

Mardiana Sani is a Malaysian-born photographer based in Melbourne.

Having graduated from the RMIT BA Photography 2011,
she was titled Capture Magazine's Australia's Top Emerging Photographer 2012
and awarded with the ACMP Student Photographer of The Year 2011 prize for her work in portraiture.

Taking primary inspiration from the emotional conscience,
Mardiana's images incite the viewer to feel their content, before turning thought to them.

Maturing in style, Mardiana embraces creative and technical challenges persistently.
The result of this passion has seen her work published in various commercial media.

More personal works explore imperative representations of beauty,
predisposed by an unconventional upbringing in the boom of Western globalization in South East Asia.

Mardiana is currently a resident photographer at Blue Tree Studios, Port Melbourne.
