My Experience with TBE - Dominic Hook

– posted by Mel

"I met Sally at an Alumni folio review night at CATC Design school in Melbourne, where Sally was participating in a ‘folio review: speed dating style’ event organised by the school.

Students had the chance to engage in a 10 minute 1 on 1 folio review with industry professionals and I was heavily encouraged to participate by a lecture of mine Patrick Rodriguez.

10 minutes was no where near enough time to get solid advice in my opinion, but Sally not only gave some very concise, thought clearing advice, but also an offer to join TBE as an assistant.

Since joining at the end of 2016, I have assisted 3 TBE photographers and have regular work with Andrew Richey & Ripe Studios. This work has advanced my knowledge of studio photography and lighting greatly, but also the little things which are hard to teach such as working with clients, problem solving in tough situations and the finer points of fashion and architectural photography.

So far my experience with TBE has been wonderful and I look forward to what the future has in store for me.”

BIFF - BUILDING A PORTFOLIO with Sally Brownbill

– posted by Sally

Don't miss this great opportunity to have a one on one session with me at my Building a Portfolio Workshop taking place at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, on August the 17th from 10am to 4pm.

I will take you through samples of commercial photographers folios I have designed and explain why pages work well together and highlight the reasons behind combinations of images. I can show you practical ways at looking at a body of work and give you tips on editing your own images, something that most photographers find extremely difficult.

In the afternoon you will show me your own portfolio. I will give you tips on what is working, what isn’t and why. I will give you ideas on how to improve the layout and content of the folio. Each member in the workshop will gain valuable knowledge on their own portfolios and also learn from listening to the comments and questions from their peers when they show theirs.

There are 10 places only, please join me, I'd love to see you there! Book here.

Top 5 Tips You Need to Consider When Putting a Folio Together

– posted by Sally

Twelve years ago I began working with people to build, edit and design their folios. There was a real need for photographers and creatives to have a second pair of well-trained eyes to look over their work.

An independent, honest approach is how I work. It is all about the creative on the day we work together, listening to them and working through a plan of attack on how to best show their work, be it for folios, websites or exhibitions.

Giving constructive criticism on how their images work together, what their strengths and weaknesses are and how best to build a story around their work are some of the many topics we cover during our session.

1) Be individual in how you present your work.

2) Don’t put your work into sections eg: food, people, interiors, create an ebb and flow.

3) Put in the folio what YOU want to shoot,  you can never try to guess what others want to see.

4) Always include personal work so the viewer can see WHO you are and what you like to shoot.

5) Don’t show too much or too little work around 20 double spreads give or take works well.
